Keeping Children Safe at Alderbury & West Grimstead CE Primary School

At Alderbury & West Grimstead CE Primary School, we are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children in our care. We recognise that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and is at the heart of everything we do.

We aim to provide a safe, caring, and supportive environment where children feel secure, valued, and listened to. All staff and governors have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

Our Safeguarding Commitment

Safeguarding at Alderbury & West Grimstead CE Primary School includes:

  • Protecting children from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and harm
  • Promoting the health, safety, and wellbeing of every child
  • Ensuring children know who they can talk to if they are worried
  • Supporting children to develop resilience and the skills to keep themselves safe, including online safety
  • Providing a safe and inclusive learning environment where concerns are taken seriously

We follow statutory guidance, including Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), and work in line with our local safeguarding partners.

Child Protection and Reporting Concerns

All staff, governors, and volunteers receive regular safeguarding training and are aware of the signs of abuse, neglect and other safeguarding concerns.

If a child makes a disclosure:

  • Staff will listen carefully and calmly
  • They will not ask leading questions
  • They will reassure the child that they are being taken seriously
  • They will record the concern accurately and pass it immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead

The DSL will then decide on the appropriate action, which may include referring to external agencies.

Working Together with Families and Agencies

We believe safeguarding is most effective when schools, families, and external agencies work together.

We work closely with:

  • Local authority children’s services
  • Health professionals
  • Police and other safeguarding partners
  • Early Help services
  • Other relevant support agencies

Our aim is always to ensure children receive the right support at the right time.

Early Help

At Alderbury & West Grimstead CE Primary School, we recognise the importance of providing Early Help as soon as possible when needs arise.

Early Help means offering support to children and families at the earliest stage of difficulty to prevent concerns from escalating. This may include support for:

  • Attendance concerns
  • Behaviour or emotional wellbeing
  • Family circumstances
  • Learning or developmental needs
  • Social, emotional, or mental health needs

We may work with families to develop an Early Help Assessment and coordinate support from a range of professionals where needed.

If you feel your family could benefit from Early Help, please speak to a member of staff or contact the school office. We are here to support you. More information can be found in our Early Help statement which is available further down this page.

Online Safety

Online safety is an essential part of safeguarding at our school. We:

  • Teach pupils how to stay safe online
  • Promote responsible use of technology
  • Educate children about risks such as cyberbullying, online grooming, and inappropriate content
  • Provide guidance and resources for parents and carers

We encourage families to have open conversations with their children about their online experiences. You can find out more in our Online Safety Policy, available on our policies page here.

Supporting Children’s Wellbeing

We are committed to supporting the emotional wellbeing and mental health of all pupils.

Our staff:

  • Are approachable and trained to listen
  • Support children experiencing friendship issues, bullying, anxiety or other concerns
  • Promote positive mental health through our curriculum and school ethos

We work to ensure that every child feels safe, supported, and included.
