At Alderbury & West Grimstead Church of England Primary School, we are committed to providing high-quality physical education (PE), sport and physical activity that supports every child to develop the knowledge, skills, confidence and motivation to lead healthy and active lives.

What is the PE and Sport Premium?

The Primary PE and Sport Premium is additional government funding provided to primary schools to make additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE, sport and physical activity.

The funding is intended to improve the quality and breadth of PE, sport and physical activity provision and to build the capacity and capability of the school to provide sustainable opportunities for pupils to be physically active.

The funding may support improvements including:

• developing the knowledge, skills and confidence of staff to deliver high-quality PE and physical activity;
• improving the quality and breadth of PE, sport and physical activity provision;
• increasing participation in physical activity and sport;
• providing opportunities for pupils to participate in competitive sport;
• broadening the range of sports and physical activities available to pupils;
• supporting inclusive opportunities so that all pupils can participate and benefit;
• developing active playtimes, lunchtimes and other opportunities for physical activity; and
• providing additional opportunities to support pupils who are less active or who would benefit from targeted provision.

How we use the funding

We use our PE and Sport Premium strategically to ensure that investment has a positive and sustainable impact on pupils and on the school's future provision. Further information can be found in the report at the bottom of this page.

Developing teaching and learning

We may use funding to:

• provide professional development for teachers and other staff;
• develop staff knowledge, skills and confidence in delivering high-quality PE and physical activity;
• improve curriculum planning, progression and assessment;
• access specialist support where this develops staff capacity and leaves a sustainable improvement in school provision; and
• enhance the quality and range of PE and sporting experiences available to pupils.

Increasing participation and inclusion

We aim to provide opportunities for all pupils to be physically active and to enjoy sport. This may include:

• increasing opportunities for physical activity beyond curriculum PE;
• developing active play and lunchtime provision;
• providing a wider range of sporting activities and clubs;
• supporting pupils who are less active to become more engaged in physical activity;
• providing inclusive opportunities for pupils with different needs and abilities; and
• increasing participation in school and inter-school sporting activities.

Competitive sport and leadership

We recognise the value of competition, teamwork and leadership in developing children's confidence and resilience.

Funding may therefore support:

• participation in local inter-school competitions and festivals;
• opportunities for intra-school competition;
• development of pupil leadership and responsibility through sport and physical activity; and
• opportunities for pupils to represent the school in a range of sporting activities.

Swimming and water safety

We recognise the importance of children developing essential swimming and water-safety skills.

Where appropriate and in accordance with the funding conditions, the premium may be used to provide additional support for pupils who have not met the national curriculum swimming and water-safety requirements following their core swimming provision.

Our commitment to sustainability

We aim to use the Primary PE and Sport Premium in ways that create lasting improvements, rather than simply funding activities that would otherwise be part of the school's core provision.

Our focus is therefore on developing staff expertise, improving resources and provision, increasing participation and establishing approaches that can continue to benefit pupils beyond the period of funding.

We monitor the impact of our spending on pupils' participation, engagement and experiences of PE, sport and physical activity and use this information to inform future provision.
