Music is strongly encouraged in the school. Our Music curriculum follows the Charanga scheme, which encompasses singing and playing instruments in a range of genres as well as musical skills such as performing, composing, listening and appraising. Singing is greatly enjoyed by the children and the whole school participates in ‘Sing Up’ worship every Tuesday.
Peripatetic music teachers visit school during the week to teach piano, guitar, strings, woodwind and brass on a 1:1 basis. Children in Years 2 to 6 are offered the opportunity to take advantage of these lessons. In addition, Year 2 children enjoy weekly whole-class recorder lessons with an external music specialist.
Children who have instrumental lessons in school are given the opportunity to perform in our annual ‘Musical Extravaganza’, which runs alongside our school fete in the summer. This gives children a chance to perform to a real audience and show off their musical talents!
The school has an active choir for all ages, which has taken part in the Wiltshire Choir of the Year awards in Devizes and the annual Small Schools’ Carol Concert in Salisbury, as well as singing at events such as Christmas and Harvest.
We have been fortunate to participate recently in a range of quality musical opportunities across various year groups. Year 5 took part in a Wiltshire Music project based around Holst’s Planets Suite. Years 4 and 6 enjoyed a workshop with representatives from the Welsh National Opera. We have also had several visiting musicians performing in classes and assemblies.
