Artist

Art & Design at Alderbury & West Grimstead CE Primary School

At AWGS, we believe that being an Artist is about far more than producing artwork — it is about exploring ideas, expressing emotions, developing creativity and learning to see the world in new ways. Art is a powerful tool for thinking, communicating and understanding and we want every child to feel inspired, confident and capable as an Artist.

Being Inspired Through Art

Each year group has at least one enquiry where being an Artist is the lead state of being. In these enquiries, pupils explore artistic techniques, study the work of influential artists and develop their own creative responses.

Throughout the year, many other enquiries include being an Artist as a secondary state, meaning that children may be Scientists, Historians or Designers while using art to express, represent or deepen their learning. This helps pupils understand that art is not separate from other subjects — it is a powerful way to communicate ideas across the curriculum.

What We Aim to Develop

Through our Art & Design curriculum, we encourage pupils to:

  • Explore and experiment with a wide range of materials and techniques

  • Develop their creativity, imagination and personal expression

  • Build confidence in drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media

  • Study and appreciate the work of artists, designers and craftspeople

  • Reflect on their work and the work of others

  • Use art to communicate ideas, emotions and understanding

  • Make meaningful links between art and the wider world

Additional Opportunities

Beyond planned enquiries, pupils are encouraged to take part in additional artistic experiences throughout the year. These may include:

  • Whole‑school art projects

  • Gallery events and exhibitions

  • Artist workshops

  • Outdoor art and nature‑based creativity

  • Community art initiatives
