Geographer

Geography at Alderbury & West Grimstead CE Primary School

Our Being a Geographer curriculum is designed to nurture children’s curiosity, fascination and sense of wonder about the world and its people — a curiosity we hope will stay with them for life.

Through rich, enquiry‑led learning, pupils investigate a wide range of places, both within Britain and across the wider world. This helps them develop a secure understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes and how these shape the environments we live in.

Learning About Our Local Area

We are committed to helping children develop a strong sense of identity and place. Pupils explore and investigate our local area of Salisbury and Wiltshire, learning about:

  • Local landmarks and landscapes

  • Human and physical features

  • How our community has developed over time

  • What makes our area unique and special

This grounding in local geography helps children build meaningful connections before exploring the wider world.

Developing Geographical Skills

Throughout their time at AWGS, pupils learn to apply a wide range of geographical skills so they can confidently communicate their findings and understanding. These include:

  • Map reading and interpretation

  • Fieldwork techniques

  • Observing, measuring and recording

  • Analysing patterns and relationships

  • Presenting information clearly to different audiences
