Musician
Music at Alderbury & West Grimstead CE Primary School

Being a Musician is strongly encouraged and celebrated at AWGS. As well as learning through our enquiry‑led curriculum, pupils enjoy a wide range of additional opportunities to develop their musical skills, creativity and confidence.
We use the Charanga music scheme, which provides a rich and varied programme of singing, listening, composing and performing across a range of genres. Children learn to use their voices expressively, play tuned and untuned instruments and develop key musical skills such as rhythm, pitch, notation and appraisal.
Singing is a joyful part of school life. Every Friday, the whole school comes together for ‘Sing Up’ worship, which is a highlight of the week for many pupils.

Instrumental Lessons
We are fortunate to have a team of peripatetic music teachers who visit school each week to offer 1:1 lessons in:
-
Piano
-
Guitar
-
Strings
-
Woodwind
-
Brass
These lessons are available to children in Years 2 to 6.
In addition, all Year 2 pupils enjoy weekly whole‑class recorder lessons with an external music specialist, giving them a strong foundation in reading music and playing an instrument.
Performance Opportunities
Children who learn instruments in school are given regular opportunities to perform for their peers and to parents throughout the year. These performances help pupils:
-
Build confidence
-
Develop stage presence
-
Share their musical talents with a real audience
Performing is an important part of being a Musician and we are proud of the enthusiasm and courage our pupils show.
Musical Experiences and Enrichment
We are committed to providing high‑quality musical experiences across the school. Recently, pupils have enjoyed:
-
Taking part in Salisbury Radio's 'Song for Christmas'
-
Performing at the Christmas Carol Service and Easter Service
-
Visits from professional musicians, who have performed in classes and assemblies
