Philosopher: PSHE

PSHE & RSE at Alderbury & West Grimstead CE Primary School

All pupils at AWGS study PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) to equip them with the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to look after themselves and to play an active, responsible role in society. Through our Being a Philosopher curriculum, children learn to reflect, question, make informed choices and understand the world around them.

Our PSHE Curriculum

PSHE is taught through a series of enquiries where Being a Philosopher is either the lead or supporting state of being. Learning is rooted in real‑life contexts and encourages children to think deeply about themselves, others and the wider world. We also follow SCARF's PSHE scheme.

Our curriculum includes:

  • Health and wellbeing

  • Relationships

  • Living in the wider world

  • Keeping safe

  • Emotional literacy and self‑esteem

  • Rights, responsibilities and citizenship

Relationships & Sex Education (RSE)

Relationships and Sex Education is taught through both PSHE and Science, following statutory DfE guidance.

We aim to equip children with age‑appropriate knowledge about:

  • The human body

  • Human growth and development

  • Personal relationships

  • Family values and parenting

  • Sexual identity and self‑esteem

  • The life cycle

  • Safety and child protection

All of this is taught within a framework that explores Christian values, moral issues, responsibilities and risks.

Working in Partnership with Parents

We recognise that RSE is a shared responsibility between school and home.

  • Parents are invited to preview all RSE materials before they are used in class.

  • Parents have the right to withdraw their child from sex education (non‑statutory elements) and should notify the Headteacher in writing if they wish to do so.

  • Relationships Education is statutory and all pupils must take part in this aspect of the curriculum.

Our aim is to ensure that children feel informed, supported and confident as they grow and develop.
