Church Schools Flourishing

As a Church of England school, our Christian vision of Foundations for Life and our core values of Kindness, Justice and Respect shape every aspect of school life. Through these values, we strive to enable all pupils and adults to flourish in body, mind and spirit — becoming confident, compassionate and curious individuals who contribute positively to our community and beyond.

Collective Worship

Collective worship is a central part of our daily life and a key expression of our church school identity. It brings children and staff together regularly to pray, reflect, praise and explore Christian teaching. While daily worship is a statutory requirement for all schools, for us it is so much more — it is a special time when we grow together spiritually, celebrate our values and deepen our understanding of God’s love.

Our acts of worship:

  • Are Christian in character, rooted in Bible teaching and the traditions of the Church of England.

  • Include leadership from school staff, pupils, local clergy and church volunteers.

  • Provide regular opportunities for reflection, prayer and response to the Christian message.

  • Celebrate key moments in the Christian calendar and link to our school values.

Children are actively involved in planning and leading worship, which enhances its impact and enables them to take ownership of their spiritual development.

Collective Worships which take place are:

Monday  -  ‘Values’ Worship led by Headteacher

Tuesday -  News Day Tuesday led by pupils

Wednesday -  Worship led by local church leader

Thursday -  Celebration!

Friday -  Sing Up!

Living Our Vision and Values

Our Christian vision and values do not sit separately from daily school life — they are lived out in everything we do. In school, pupils are encouraged to:

  • Show Kindness in their words and actions, caring for others as part of a loving community.

  • Act Justly, treating others fairly and speaking up for what is right.

  • Demonstrate Respect in how they treat others and the world around them.

These values shape positive behaviour, supportive relationships and an environment in which everyone can feel safe, valued and included.

Across the curriculum, through day-to-day interactions, and in times of worship, pupils reflect on how these values connect to their own lives and to Christian teaching.

Spiritual Development and Flourishing

At AWGS, flourishing means much more than academic success. We seek to nurture the whole child — intellectually, emotionally and spiritually — enabling pupils to explore life’s big questions, reflect on their experiences and make meaning in the world around them. Spiritual development is encouraged through:

  • Times for reflection and prayer

  • Opportunities to explore personal beliefs and values

  • Engagement with Bible stories and Christian teaching

  • Collective worship, RE and class discussions

Our school community values respectful dialogue, encouraging pupils to express their own views and to listen with openness to others.

Church and Community Links

We are fortunate to have strong relationships with our local church leaders and congregations, who visit school to lead worship and enrich our Christian life. These links help to strengthen the Christian character of the school and provide meaningful connections between school, church and community.

Our SIAMS Context

In our most recent SIAMS inspection, AWGS was recognised as a highly successful church school with strong Christian leadership and a nurturing culture where every member of the community is treated in line with our values of Kindness, Justice and Respect. Pupils were described as confident ambassadors for the school, demonstrating how the vision is lived out in daily life.
