Author

We follow a text based approach to being an Author. This approach focuses on immersing children in high quality texts to support the teaching of reading and writing. The book provides the context for writing, giving children an audience and purpose. This is important so children can think about what they are writing and why. By immersing children in whole texts, this provides richer reading experiences and children can use their full understanding of the story when predicting or making inferences. Reading and writing are linked and feed into one another.

Key grammar and punctuation elements and specific skills needed for writing are taught alongside text based approach.

Phonics & Early Reading

At AWGS, we aim to develop confident readers who have a love of books from the very outset.

We teach Phonics using Little Wandle - All the resources, phoneme finders and progression documents are available on thier website, to help you support this learning from home.

We use Collins Big Cat books, to support our phonics and reading programme. Please also see our "How to support with Reading" presentation, which is available in our video resources centre.

Handwriting

We encourage all children to use a neat cursive script and you can access resources to support this from home here. The School’s Username is: eg1773 Password: home
