Author

Being an Author at AWGS is an integral part of all that we do and involves an engaging, text-based approach to teaching and learning. In all year groups, children are immersed in high quality texts, promoting a love of both reading and writing and developing associated skills as part of a well-planned, progressive curriculum. Engaging books provide the drivers for our writing learning journeys, with children writing for a range of genres, audiences and purposes. Dedicated Guided Reading sessions are focused on the teaching of specific reading skills, developing fluency and comprehension appropriate for pupils’ age and stage.  Children’s reading and writing learning experiences are linked and mutually supportive.  Wherever possible, these also support teaching and learning in other curriculum subjects, with opportunities for pupils to understand the real-life contexts for reading and writing.

Phonics & Early Reading

At AWGS, we aim to develop confident readers who have a love of books from the very outset.

We teach Phonics using Little Wandle - All the resources, phoneme finders and progression documents are available on thier website, to help you support this learning from home.

We use Collins Big Cat books, to support our phonics and reading programme. Please also see our "How to support with Reading" presentation, which is available in our video resources centre.

Handwriting

We encourage all children to use a neat cursive script and you can access resources to support this from home here. The School’s Username is: eg1773 Password: home

If accessing from a tablet the username is the same: eg1773 and the password is an “L” shaped finger swipe!
